Biografia:
George J Sowden ha studiato architettura al Gloucester College of Art negli anni sessanta. Nel 1970 si è trasferito a Milano e ha incontrato Ettore Sottsass. Gli è stato offerto un lavoro all’Olivetti ed è lì che è diventato un designer. Lo studio SowdenDesign fu fondato nel 1981. Da subito occupato con molti di coloro che sarebbero più tardi diventati personalità internazionali nel mondo del design, ha presto stabilito relazioni con marchi come Alessi, Steelcase, Olivetti, Alstom, Swatch e molti altri. La storia di SowdenDesign attraversa diversi periodi, come quello degli anni Settanta caratterizzato dalla ricerca nell’ambito del design radicale, cui si affianca parallelamente la realizzazione dei primi prodotti elettromeccanici ed elettronici per Olivetti; a questo seguì il periodo di Memphis negli anni Ottanta e il crescente interesse di Sowden nell’evoluzione dei prodotti elettronici di consumo; dagli anni Novanta lo studio è impegnato sia nello sviluppo di vari tipi di prodotti industriali sia in importanti prodotti artigianali, quali tessuti, vetro e ceramica.
Biography:
George J Sowden studied architecture at Gloucester College of Art in the 1960s. In 1970, he went to Milan and met Ettore Sottsass. He was offered a job with Olivetti and it was there that he became a designer. The SowdenDesign studio was established in 1981, and engaged with a wide spectrum of those who would later become high-profile figures in international design, establishing relationships with brands such as Alessi, Steelcase, Olivetti, Alstom, Swatch and many more. The history of the SowdenDesign studio is made up of many different strata, including its radical years of design research in the 1970s, in parallel with its early work for Olivetti’s first electro-mechanical and electronic products. This was followed by the Memphis years in the 1980s and Sowden’s increasing curiosity with regard to the evolving identity of electronic consumer products. Since the 1990s, the studio has accumulated experience in the development of various kinds of industrially manufactured products, as well as important artisanal products such as textiles, glass and ceramics.
