Biografia:
Nato nel 1943 a Mendrisio, Ticino, dopo un periodo d’apprendistato a Lugano, frequenta il liceo artistico di Milano e prosegue i suoi studi all'Istituto Universitario d'Architettura di Venezia, dove si laurea nel 1969 con i relatori Carlo Scarpa e Giuseppe Mazzariol. Durante il periodo trascorso a Venezia, ha occasione di incontrare e lavorare per Le Corbusier e Louis Kahn. La sua attività professionale ha inizio nel 1970 a Lugano. Dal 1966 si è impegnato come ideatore e fondatore della nuova Accademia di architettura Ticino di Mendrisio dove è Professore ordinario dal 1996, e ha svolto l’incarico di direttore per l’anno accademico 2002/03. Ha ricevuto importanti riconoscimenti tra cui il Merit Award for Excellence in Design dall’AIA; l’International Architecture Award 2006 e 2007 dal Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design; l’ “European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage Europa Nostra”, The Hague (The Netherlands). Numerose sono le mostre dedicate alla sua ricerca.

Biography:
Mario Botta was born in Mendrisio, Switzerland, in 1943. After completing an apprenticeship in Lugano, he first attended the Art College in Milan before going on to study at the University Institute of Architecture in Venice. Under the tutelage of Carlo Scarpa and Giuseppe Mazzariol, he received his professional degree in 1969. During his time in Venice, he had the opportunity to meet and work for Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn. He opened his own practice in 1970 in Lugano. In 1996, he founded the New Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio, where he served as Director in 2002 and 2003, and remains a Professor. His work has been showered with important awards such as the Merit Award for Excellence in Design from the AIA; the International Architecture Award 2006 and 2007 from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design; and the 'Europa Nostra European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage' at the Hague (the Netherlands). His work has been showcased at numerous exhibitions.
